How to Use a Tile Levelling System Properly?

Installing tiles can be a tricky DIY job. Getting the surface perfectly level is key to a professional-looking finish. That’s where a tile levelling system comes in. A tile leveller allows you to quickly and accurately level each tile during installation for consistent joints and a flat surface. Here’s how to use a tile levelling system to get great results:

Choose the Right Tile Leveller System

There are a few main types of tile levellers on the market:

  • Clip-On Tile Levelling System
  • Wedge and Strap Tile Levelling System
  • Spin Doctor Tile Levelling System
  • T-Lock Tile Levelling System
  • Reusable Tile Levelling System
  • Screw-In Tile Levelling System
  • Snap-On Tile Levelling System
  • Edge Levelling System
  • Interlocking Tile Levelling System
  • Adjustable Tile Levelling System

Consider the size of your tiles, the layout of your room, and your budget when selecting a tile leveller. Many come with their own instructions as well.

Check the Surface

Before you start tiling, make sure the floor or wall surface is level and clean. Use a straightedge and a level to check for any high or low spots. Mark areas that need patching with floor levelling compound. Remove any dust, dirt, or debris. This prep work will save time and frustration down the road.

Plan the Layout

Take time to plan the layout of your tiles. Try to minimize the number of awkwardly shaped edge tiles. Look for symmetrical patterns and visually balanced final results. Figure out where you’ll start and the order in which you’ll place the tiles. A careful plan will make installation much smoother.

Apply the Adhesive

Only spread adhesive over a small section at a time that you can reasonably tile within 15-20 minutes. Use a notched trowel to ensure an even application and adequate coverage. Place the first tile, press it down, and twist to fully embed it in the adhesive.

Install the Tile Leveller Clips/Caps

Place clip or cap tile levellers on the corners of each tile as you place it, clipping them onto the edges. Make sure they are positioned to leave the desired grout joint spacing. The clips will hold each tile level and in place until the adhesive dries.

Check the Spacing

Periodically place spacers in the gaps between tiles to ensure a consistent width. Check tiles along both horizontal and vertical joints. Make adjustments to the tile leveller clips while the adhesive is still wet, if needed.

Remove Excess Adhesive

As you install each section, clean up excess adhesive that squeezes through the joints with a trowel or putty knife. This means less work to do later when cleaning the tiles.

Allow Time to Dry

Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for drying time. This is usually 24-48 hours. Don’t remove the tile levelling system until the adhesive has fully cured. Trying to remove clips too soon can disrupt the tiles or cause lippage.

Remove Clips and Spacers

Once the adhesive has fully cured, gently pry or pop off the tile leveller clips. Pull out any plastic spacing wedges or crosses as well. Be careful not to damage the edges of the tiles.

Apply Grout

Mix grout according to the product instructions and spread it evenly across the whole tiled area. Use a grout float to push it down into the joints. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe away the excess with a clean, wet sponge for a seamless finish.

A tile leveller makes getting those joints perfect a With the right tile levelling system and some care during installation, you can achieve professional-grade results. Take your time, and don’t hesitate to rent or buy a laser level or other advanced tools for precision.
